Making a forest floor for wargaming

I'm currently working on setting up the scenery for the Teugen-Hausen scenario in 1809. It calls for a large wooded ridge on one side, which required some extra work for me to get a look I was happy with.

Here's the start. The ridge is visible better in the next picture. I tried putting my trees on this, but the problem with having a mat with all fields on it is that it just looked like fields with random trees on it, not a forest!

This shows how steep the ridge is.

The only solution of course was to make a forest floor mat that would sit atop my main mat and make it look less agrarian. This is a scrap piece of canvas I had, cut into two smaller sections. Above, you see one of the sections in progress. I smear brown DAP cedar brown caulk using a plastic spatula tool, then sprinkle several colors of flock on it. I use a mixed brown color and then some highlights of green. I only do a foot or two at a time so I can get the flock on before the caulk dries. It's spread pretty thin over the canvas, so it starts to set pretty quick.

Here's the original ridge. Too much like fields and no amount of trees is going to make it look like a forest.

Here are the two mats (overlapping) in place. Now we're talking! Looks much more like a wild area.

And a shot with the trees in place. I really need more trees to be truly happy, but the supplies I need to make more won't arrive until next week, so this is it for now. Still plenty of room to deploy troops. I just move the tree stands as needed as the troops move through.
