Gender roles switch up as Lucy Liu plays Sherlock Holmes' sidekick opposite Jonny Lee Miller

Lucy Liu is set to star as Sherlock Holmes’ sidekick in the modern day remake titled, Elementary.

Although the original personality was male, the actress will play Watson, in the CBS’ drama pilot written by Robert Doherty.

This time the creator, known for his work on Star Trek Voyager and Tru Calling, is making Holmes’ best friend a female, naming Liu’s character Joan Watson.

The character of Watson was recently depicted by Jude Law in the cinema and Martin Freeman in the BBC's take on Doyle's detective books.

Other actors such as Dudley Moore, Robert Duvall,, Ben Kingsley, and James Mason have also played the him.

The producer of the BBC's Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch - recently issued a warning to bosses.

Sue Vertue said: ‘We have been in touch with CBS and informed them that we will be looking at their finished pilot very closely for any infringement of our rights.’

The 43-year-old is used to playing the role of tough and intelligent girls.

Her past credits include playing Alex Munday in the Charlie’s Angels movies alongside Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymoore.

She can now often be seen driving an LAPD vehicle and donning a crisp police uniform, trudging the crime infested neighbourhoods in unflattering black flat boots in the gritty TNT series Southland.

Switching up the gender roles is not the only revamp the series contains, it is set in the present day and will not be based in London.

Instead Holmes is a former consultant to Scotland Yard and has just emerged from a rehabilitation centre in New York.

Now consulting for the New York Police Department, the character is living in the borough of Brooklyn with his sober friend played by Liu, an ex surgeon who lost her medical licence when a patient died.
