Our Favorite Recycled Shoes for 2019 - Inverse

When it comes to helping the environment, it's pretty much impossible for a single person to make a noticeable difference on their own. That said, if all of us make little environmentally friendly choices every day, those choices start to add up. And one easy choice anyone can make is to buy recycled shoes.

Standard shoe manufacturing methods produce an exorbitant amount of industrial waste, which is bad enough in itself. Making matters worse is the fact that a lot of the most common materials—leather, rubber, and various synthetic textiles—are pretty terrible for the environment. When you buy shoes made from recycled materials, you help cut back on that waste and send a signal to shoe companies that there's a market for sustainable products. And you don't have to sacrifice style for ethics, either, because there are a lot of awesome looking shoes made out of things like recycled water bottles and industrial rubber scraps.

Don't believe it? We went out and found what we consider to be some of the best recycled shoes for 2019. So take a look and see for yourself.

The Timberland Brooklyn Oxford offers classic Timberland style with a retro style vibe. This sneaker features mesh linings made from at least 50-percent recycled plastic bottles, with rubber outsoles made from at least 34-percent recycled materials. The standard Brooklyn Oxford comes in three colors, has a leather and synthetic upper with a perforated toe for breathability, a lace-up closure, and a padded collar and tongue. Timberland also has a version of the Brooklyn Oxford with a breathable camo print mesh upper.

With the Merrell Gridway, you get the support and durability of a hiking shoe in the form of a fashion-forward low-top sneaker. The knit upper and laces are made from 100-percent recycled materials. The shock-absorbing removable EVA foam insoles are made from 50-percent recycled materials. The EVA midsoles are made from 40-percent recycled materials. And the Vibram EcoDura outsole is made from 30-percent post-industrial scrap rubber. With a traditional lace enclosure and ribbed collar for ultimate comfort, these shoes will keep you comfortable and stylish whether you're at the office or on the trail.

French sneaker company VEJA is serious about sustainability. They use either organic fairly traded cotton or recycled materials to make the canvas for all their shoes, and they use wild fair-trade rubber for all their soles. The SDU RT is no exception. The upper is constructed with B-mesh, a breathable synthetic fabric made from recycled plastic bottles. The panels are made from "vegan" (artificial) suede. And the EVA foam insoles and outsoles are made from both recycled and natural rubber, which comes from Amazonian rubber trees instead of oil refineries. Made in Brazil and completely free of any animal products, the VEJA SDU RT will have you looking good with a clean conscience.

Cardi B has broadcasted snippets and details of her life on social media long before her rap career took off, and fame clearly hasn't changed that aspect of the "Press" rapper's life. Cardi B posted a video on Twitter revealing her feet are so small that she needs to wear child-size shoes.

Cardi B revealed her sneaker size in a photo she posted to Twitter. "REEBOK ….. Fun fact I am a size 3 and a half in sneakers," she said.

She later posted a video of her Jordan sneakers and showed the size label. "Yes, I'm a size three-and-a-half. This one is a size three because it's really hard to find sneakers that are three-and-a-half," said the rapper. "If f ya ever wanna buy me a gift now ya know my shoe size," the caption stated. A youth size three-and-a-half is equivalent to a women's size three.

One fan replied to her Reebok photo, saying her body wasn't proportional because she was a "big gyal with small feet." Cardi clapped back by assuring she was in no way a big gal. "I'm actually 5'3 and I weight 120," she said

Luckily for Cardi B, youth sized shoes are much cheaper than women's sizes— not that the rapper needs to be concerned about prices.

Comrades Marathon to Recycle Hydrating IV Drip Bags Into Shoes for Kids - runnersworld.com

  • New for 2019, Comrades Marathon will collect the IV drip bags used to rehydrate runners after the race to recycle them into running shoes.
  • The 56-mile ultramarathon, which kicks off on June 9, starts in the South African city of Durban and runs to Pietermaritzburg.

From water cups to personal fuel wrappers to post-race IV drip bags, a lot of waste is accumulated at races. Lately, organizers have been trying to minimize the trash, implementing green solutions like offering water in edible seaweed pods instead of standard paper cups, as seen at the London Marathon.

In a similar fashion, Comrades Marathon, a 56-mile ultra that kicks off on June 9, came up with a brilliant way to reuse the IV drip bags that will rehydrate athletes after the race: Turn them into shoes.

According to The South African, Comrades will donate the used bags, which are made of non-toxic PVC (polyvinyl chloride), to a nonprofit called "My Walk," which collects used, uncontaminated drip bags from medical centers and repurposes them as running shoes for South African children whose families can't afford them. Many of these children, the publication wrote, would have to walk long distances barefoot to school.

"We are grateful to the Comrades Marathon team for affording us this opportunity to 'Walk' together with them on their journey," Colin Sheen, managing director of Adcock Ingram Critical Care (the company that supplies the IV bags) told IOL.

"This is so well aligned with the [Comrades Marathon]'s strategic focus of sustainability and environmental responsibility," added Comrades Medical Convenor Jeremy Boulter to IOL. To further reduce the amount of plastic waste on race day, Comrades partnered with water company Thirsti, which will be distributing water in thin plastic sachets instead of bottles or cups.

Boasting around 25,000 participants each year, Comrades is the oldest, largest, and one of the toughest ultramarathons in the world. The race is a point-to-point route between the South African cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg—a locale known as the "Valley of a Thousand Hills"—featuring grueling undulations and blisteringly hot, humid stretches.

Unlike most ultramarathons, which are run primarily on mountain trails, Comrades is set completely on paved roads: a blessing for those who get tripped up on roots, but a challenge for those who struggle to withstand the pounding of a full day on pavement. Luckily, the event is so popular in South Africa that crowds are positioned along the entire route to cheer on runners.

The "Super Bowl" of ultras has a massive number of participants compared to other endurance races, but far fewer runners complete the race than start it. In 2018, out of the 21,500 runners who started the race, only 16,486 finished within the 12-hour cutoff time. Regardless of whether the runners finish or not, immediate hydration is key after they stop running—so it's no wonder that Comrades stocks so many IV drip bags for the athletes.

"Once you've done a Comrades," a race participant named Sizo told Runner's World in 2017, "You've created history for yourself, which is not easy for most individuals to do."

The guy who threw his shoes at George W. Bush just endorsed Mike Gravel for president - The Daily Dot

Posted: 08 Jun 2019 10:08 AM PDT

Iraqi journalist Muntadhar al-Zaidi, who gained notoriety for throwing his shoes at former President George W. Bush during a 2008 press conference, has officially endorsed Mike Gravel's 2020 presidential campaign.

After the shoe-throwing incident, al-Zaidi was arrested and received a three-year prison sentence. He was released on September 15, 2009–nine months after his incarceration–on the grounds of good behavior, and also because he had no previous criminal record.

Al-Zaidi committed the act as a form of protest against U.S. military occupation in Iraq.

"This is for the widows and orphans and all those killed in Iraq," al-Zaidi shouted as he threw the second shoe.

Former Alaskan Senator Mike Gravel ran for President in 2008 as a vehemently anti-war candidate and has said, of his 2020 campaign, that "the goal will not be to win, but to bring a critique of American imperialism to the Democratic debate stage." It is for this reason that the endorsement seems to be a match made in heaven.

The 88-year-old's 2020 venture began as the brainchild of two New York teens, and it has been chock-full of memes since its inception. However, as the campaign continues and endorsements like this begin to accrue, it is clear that Gravel is seeking to prove that his campaign isn't a laughing matter.
