TREND : 1980s

Nothing makes me happier then the return of the 80s to the catwalks.

Correction, I'm even more delighted that it is an Irish designer who has started this trend! J W Anderson filled the catwalk with a homage to the 80s and it was amazing. Normally, I associate JW Anderson with clothing that is a million miles away from the gaudy, sequinned, bright colors of the 1980s but this really works.

I got so sick of the 70s everywhere. I've never been a massive fan of the trend to be honest. I'm also sick of the 90s which still rages on with no sign of stopping. The 80s make me happy. There were boardroom power suits with shoulder pads juxtaposed with bright night time looks.

The high street has already started to throw out 80s stuff. Topshop responded with some gorgeous 80s inspired brightly coloured coats. So there is a way of repeating the look for less. Also, sheer tights are back. I don't know how I feel about this.

When I was at art college in 2004, this was a massive thing. Dressing in 80s shapes, adding waist belts, slouchy boots, bright clashing prints and generally listening to 80s pop. I know that trends go in circles inspired by whatever was hot twenty years ago but I cannot get on board with the 90s. I think its because I lived through it but the 80s, I was too young. Everything in the 80s feels like exploring because its a decade I have no memory of. However, this is how those born in the 90s think about the 90s. Maybe thats the appeal.
