Billboard Music Awards 2018: Nominees include Sam Hunt, Lionel Richie, Florida Georgia Line

Nominees for the 2018 Billboard Music Awards were announced today, and four acts with Alabama ties are on the list.

Sam Hunt earned five nominations, including a nod for the Billboard Chart Achievement Award. In this category, Hunt is competing with Drake, Ed Sheeran, Camila Cabello and Cardi B. He's also in the running for Top Selling Song, vying with Sheeran, Imagine Dragons and Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber. 

Florida Georgia Line received two nominations in country categories. Zac Brown Band and Lionel Richie have one nod apiece in country and R&B categories. 

Zac Brown Band and Florida Georgia Line are rivals for one of the same awards this year, Top Country Duo/Group Artist. In this category there's just one other nominee, Old Dominion.

Hunt, a former Birmingham resident, was the starting quarterback for the UAB Blazers in 2006-2007. His wife, Hannah Lee Fowler, grew up in Alabama and has been the inspiration for several of Hunt's songs, including "Body Like a Back Road." His 2014 debut album, "Montevallo," was named after her hometown.

"Body Like a Back Road," was named Single Record of the Year on April 15 at the 2018 Academy of Country Music Awards.

Florida Georgia Line, a popular bro-country duo, is composed of Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley. Hubbard is a native of Monroe, Ga., and Kelley hails from Ormond Beach, Fla., but the band is linked to Alabama. Hubbard's parents, the late Roy Wayne Hubbard and Amy Eady Hubbard, are from Bibb County. Hubbard also has other relatives in Tuscaloosa and Centreville.

Zac Brown Band includes drummer Chris Fryar, a Birmingham native who lives in the Gardendale/Mount Olive area.

LIONEL RICHIE

Richie, a household name in pop and R&B, was born in Tuskeegee. He's also a former member of the Commodores, a funk-soul band founded in Tuskegee. Richie signed on as a judge for Season 16 of "American Idol," and can be seen on the ABC reality series on Mondays and Tuesdays at 7 p.m. CT.

Top nominees for this year's Billboard Music Awards are Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran, with 15 nods apiece. They're followed by Post Malone (13 nods) Imagine Dragons (11 nominations), Drake (nine nods) and Justin Bieber and Cardi B (eight nominations apiece). Winners will be announced at a ceremony televised live on NBC, May 20 at 7 p.m. CT.

There are 57 categories total, encompassing pop, rock, country, hip-hop, Christian, gospel, dance/electronica and Latin music. Nominees are based on "key interactions with music fans, as well as album and digital songs sales, radio airplay, streaming, touring and social engagement, tracked by Billboard and its data partners, including Nielsen Music and Next Big Sound," according to the Billboard website.
