February First Friday events at the Artists' Gallery, Sumner Hall, Garfield - MyEasternShoreMD

Posted: 06 Feb 2020 08:29 AM PST

Sumner Hall presents an exhibition opening and talk with Henry Highland Garnet featured artist and speaker Kyle Hackett.

The exhibit opening and reception will be from 5 to 8 p.m. at Sumner Hall, 206 S. Queen St. in Chestertown.

Hackett is a Still Pond native and Kent County High School graduate. He is an adjunct professorial lecturer at American University. His talk on Friday will touch on "process, practice and provisionality," a news release states.

"Amazing People," an oral history exhibition curated by Lani Seikaly and Gordon Wallace, opens First Friday, Feb. 7 in the Studio Gallery at RiverArts.

An opening reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. The show features stories of the challenges and impact poverty has on children through adulthood as told by local, young men and women who have experienced it.

The story tellers are all amazing people from whom we have much to learn. The exhibit will include portraits, highlighted excerpts from interviews and short videos.

Wallace is a recent graduate from Stevenson University with a degree in digital marketing. He is a native of Kent County who is currently starting his own digital marketing agency in Chestertown named Pick6Digital.

Seikaly has been collecting stories of Kent County natives for the past 10 years. She has curated 10 oral history exhibitions at RiverArts and Sumner Hall, which feature local stories about work, civil rights, black entrepreneurs, World War II and life histories.

The Artists' Gallery will host a reception featuring the latest work of jewelry artists — in time to help celebrate Valentine's Day.

The public is invited to visit the gallery, located at 239 High St., from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday for light refreshments.

The variety of jewelry in the gallery ranges from the handcrafted jewelry by Roseannette Cooper — composed of argentium silver, beading and stones and authenticated turquoise necklaces — to Carol Casey's "smash and grab" necklaces using found objects.

In addition is the imaginative work of Michelle Armitano. A native of Massachusetts, Armitano's jewelry in sterling silver and semi-precious stones was inspired by the natural beauty she discover while living in Venezuela.

There also are a "delightful, creative mix" of sparkling earrings and necklaces crafted by Cheryl Fuhs (SS Magpie) who designs sterling silver wrapped pieces incorporating aquamarine and moonstones.

Also featured this month are a variety of bracelets in copper and crocheted wire and leather by Jeanette Silva (Silva Wear) along with earrings and necklaces by Nature's Creations, incorporating natural leaves as well as impressions of local ginkgo leaves.

The Artist' Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Sundays. For more information about the gallery, see theartistsgalleryctown.com or call 410-778-2425.

The Garfield Center for the Arts Board of Trustees will host a "Meet and Greet" from 5 to 8 p.m. on First Friday, Feb. 7.

The community is invited to attend and meet the center's new executive director, Steven Arnold.

The event will highlight volunteer opportunities at the Garfield as well.
