"Ain't Your Mama" by Jennifer Lopez - Single Review

The Latin R&B-dance-pop queen makes her triumphant return. Following the undeserved lackluster performance of her previous studio album, 2014s A.K.A, and her last official single release being "Feel the Light" from a Dreamworks film soundtrack, diva-extraordinaire Jennifer Lopez unintentionally shares her new, fiery and critical "Ain't Your Mama", before its initially scheduled American Idol debut. Co-written by Meghan Trainor and *gulp* produced by Dr. Luke, the track could be a welcomed future success for the always re-inventive artist.

"Ain't Your Mama", first teased during a Facebook live chat earlier this week, is a departure from the aggressive, hip-hop vibe of her previous full length effort. Over laidback beats and a welcomed urban/Latin flare, Lopez is upfront about her man's childish ways, and how things are about to change. With class and sass, as usual, a confident vocal performance from the artist takes charge on the pop-leaning effort, one perfectly tailored for radio airplay.

As the first single release under her new contract with Epic Records, the sizzling, straightforward, empowering effort is a nice, energetic direction for Lopez. Though Trainor is heard in a supporting role on the catchy chorus, it's Lopez's commanding lead that demands attention. "Lucky to have these curves, stop getting on my nerves, you still tryna ride this train?, cause some things have gotta change, 'round here," the artist casually sings on one of the song's assertive verses.

Lopez has had a foot in every music genre since her recording career began with instant classic "If You Had My Love" back in 1999. Her extensive artistic reach has led to the release of memorable songs with pop, dance, R&B, disco, funk and Latin influences, but for "Ain't Your Mama", one could easily chalk the release up as one buried between the urban and pop categories. While those genres mix to form the artist's tried and true comfort zone, the infectious single pushed Lopez into new, uncharted territory.

Besides a subdued yet still fierce, dance-worthy beat (have we ever expected anything less from Lopez), "Ain't Your Mama" excels thanks to the candid, tongue-in-cheek songwriting. As one of the most famous entertainers on the scene, Lopez is making it clear she doesn't need a child or a scrub to take place of the real man in her life. The message is a simple one of independence and strength, that women could effortlessly gravitate towards. Here's to never having to clean another's mess ever again.
